Hapgood: Evrenin ve Bireyin Bilinmezleri

Tom Stoppard, İngiliz Tiyatrosunun yirminci yüzyıldayetiştirdiği öncü tiyatro yazarlarından biridir. Drama- tik yaşamı, sıra dışı kimliği ve ürettiği eklektik tiyatroyapıtları bakımından çağdaşı oyun yazarlarından ay- rılır. Onun oyunları özellikle içerdikleri düşünsel tar- tışmalarla çözmesi eğlenceli bulmacalar gibidir. Çünküyazar, izleyiciyi sahnesinde sürekli olarak tartıştığı yo- ğun düşüncelerin içine çekmek ister. Stoppardın soğuksavaş yılları İngiltere sinde geçen, tartışmanın mer- kezinde bilgi casusluğu olan Hapgood (1988) da buoyunlardan biridir. Oyun, İngiliz gizli servis üyesi ki- şilerinin çözülmesi kolay olmayan düşüncelerinden vedavranışlarından oluşan birçok yap-boz parçası içerir.Tom Stoppard, Hapgood da Heisenbergin Belirsizlikİlkesinden yararlanarak, bilim-sanat düzleminde kur- duğu bir dizi eğretileme yoluyla çağdaş bireyin kim- liğini, onun özgürlüğünü, yalnızlığını ve seçimleriniderinlemesine tartışır. Hapgoodun önemli bir özelliğide dünyada o ana dekfiziği konu alan ilk sahne oyunuolmasıdır. Bu çalışma ise Stoppardın özellikle bilim-sa- nat izdüşümünde sıradan bireyin iç dünyasına odak- landığıfikirlerini değerlendirir.

Hapgood: The Unknowns of the Universe and Individual

Tom Stoppard who is brought up by British Theatre inthe twentieth century is one of the pioneer playwrights. He di ffers from his contemporaries with his drama- tic li fe, outstanding identity and the eclectic drama- tic works he produced. His plays, which particularlyinclude thought-provoking discussions, are like funnypuzzles to solve because he wishes to draw his audien- ce into those discussions continuously running on hisstage. Hapgood (1988), taking place in England duringthe cold-war years, is one of Stoppards plays in whichinformation espionage is at the centre of discussion asthe main concern. The play includes a lot of pieces ofpuzzle-formed thoughts and attitudes which belong tothe characters of the play, the members of the Britishsecret service. In Hapgood, Tom Stoppard discusses theidentity of modern man, his freedom, loneliness andchoices in detail by means of Heisenbergs UncertaintyPrinciple , and a series of metaphors he establishes onthe basis of science and art. The major characteristicfe- ature of Hapgood is that it is thefirst screen play in theworld which has taken physics as a subject matter onthe stage so far. However, this work -in the projectionof science and art- precisely evaluates Stoppards ideasfocussed on the inner world of an ordinary individual.
