A FIELD RESEARCH ON THE ADAPTATION PROBLEM OF RETURNED EMIGRANTS’ CHILDREN

Öz In the related literature it is stated that moving from one place to another causes a great number of difficulties in the lives of the second generation immigrant workers' children who generally do not have their own choices. This paper presents an empirical research which analyses the social adaptation and return period difficulties of workers’ children who returned from European Countries and are studying in high schools or equivalents. Whether the returned second generation children have approved the decision of returning, and the difficulties and living conditions they have encountered in Turkey were investigated. The adaptation of the children to the new environment was studied by comparing them with the students at the same grade and of the same sex, which is called the “control group”. Hacettepe Personality Inventory was used to measure social adaptation. Data were analysed by SPSS 10.0, Chi- square, t test, correlation coefficient, variance analysis and Wilcoxon SignedRanks nonparametric test, were employed to test the data. Contrary to the general expectation, although students who experienced emigration encounter some difficulties in the education system, they are as adaptable as their peers in the Control Group with respect to sociability.
