The localization of active hydrogen ions in gastroduodenal mucosa
Background and aims: We evaluated localization of active hydrogen ions in gastric duodenal mucosa by an original histochemical method. Materials and methods: Biopsies from ulcer site of 103 patients with duodenal ulcers and biopsies from gastric fundus and corpus were evaluated. Biopsies were cut without fixation and were dyed by nitroblue tetrazolium and examined microscopically. Results: Active hydrogen ions were found diffusely in all layers of gastric mucosa and between mucosal cells. Although there was diffuse distribution of active hydrogen ions, the amount of active hydrogen ions from biopsies of ulcer site was more than seen in controls. Conclusion: Active hydrogen ions were found diffusely in all layers of gastroduodenal mucosa without injury. The amout of hydrogen ions increased towards the antrum. The concentration of hydrogen ions was higher in biopsies from duodenal ulcer patients than in healthy controls.
