Covid-19’a yönelik elde edilen metaforlar “Ölümcül”, “Zarar Verici”, “Diğer Hastalıklara Benzeyen”, “Bulaşıcılık”, “Sosyal Ortamdan Uzaklaştıran”, “ Mücadele Edilen”, “Tedbir Alınan”, “Belirsizlik” olmak üzere 8 kategori oluşturulmuştur.
Analysis of High School Students' Perceptions of Covid-19 and Perceptions of School During the Covid-19 Period Through Metaphores
In this study, it was aimed to reveal the perceptions of high school students towards Covid-19 and the school during the Covid-19 period through metaphors. Phenomenology research design based on qualitative research approach was used in the study. Metaphor analysis, which is an effective method for investigating complex concepts, events and phenomena in depth, reveals how people envision the events in their minds. Participants of the study consisted of 185 students, 146 girls and 39 boys, who study in two high schools in Sakarya in the 2020-2021 academic year. The research was conducted with a questionnaire prepared using Google Form on the internet due to the ongoing epidemic in the country. WhatsApp application was used in the data collection process. The data obtained with the application was analyzed using content analysis technique. In the analysis of the data, the metaphors written by the students were classified within themselves according to their reasons and their frequencies were determined by creating categories according to their common features. The majority of students compared Covid-19 to flu. The metaphors obtained for Covid-19 were classified under 8 categories: "Fatal", "Harmful", "Resembling Other Diseases", "Contagious", "Distancing from Social Environment", "Struggled", "Measured", "Uncertainty". During the Covid-19 outbreak, 79 valid metaphors were produced regarding the concept of school and hospital metaphors were used the most. According to the metaphors created for the perception of school, 9 categories as "Precautionary Place", "Abandoned", "Contagious", "Dangerous", "Home Environment", "Inexplicable", "Longing", "Place of Pressure", "Entertainment" were created. According to the results of the study, it was seen that students had a negative perception of the Covid-19 epidemic and school in this period. It is thought that the negative perceptions of Covid-19 disease on students can be eliminated with the guidance of teachers, school administration and parents.
