Zoos as an Urban Open Space: Well – Known Examples From Turkey
Zoos are defined as places where animals from different geographical regions, meet with the people of the city in conditions that are limited by natural or artificial hindrances. Modern zoos have four main roles; Recreation, research, protection and education. Zoos are places where the various species facing the danger of extinction are taken under protection; scientific research carried out for the sake of social benefit and also provides social consciousness increase. The starting point of this study is to make a research on five zoos as an urban open space among well-known examples in different provinces of Turkey. This study that is based on selected zoos from Turkey, have been evaluated as versatile on the basis of their physical and managerial characteristics and according to the obtained data, suggestions have been put forward for promoting the developments of zoos
