Determination of knowledge and views of midwifery students on forensic midwifery and forensic cases

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to determine the knowledge level of midwifery undergraduate students and to raise awareness in forensic medicine cases. METHODS: The universe of this descriptive study was compri- sed of 457 students in the Department of Midwifery, Faculty of He- alth Sciences, between September 20, 2020 and October 30, 2020. A sample group of 216 was formed of midwifery students who were randomly chosen and who volunteered to participate in the study. A socio-demographics questionnaire was prepared by the researc- hers and a forensic case diagnosis form consisting of 20 questions was created by Yeşil et al. RESULTS: The average age of the students was 21.52 ± 1.36 and the mean score for forensic diagnosis was 52.01 ± 6.16. The first terms that come to mind when forensic cases are mentioned are “judicial case-autopsy” and “abuse/rape” with 27.8%. It was obser- ved that the workplaces of forensic midwives were defined as the institutions and hospitals with the highest rate, with 86.6%. It was observed that they have knowledge about forensic midwifery or fo- rensic issues (with a rate of 72.7%) and they received this informa- tion during their undergraduate education. Although the students’ scores for diagnosing forensic cases were high, it was observed that they could not define forensic cases in child health and they did not define the status of workplace accidents or drug administration errors as forensic cases. CONCLUSION: It was determined that the forensic case sco- res of the students were high, but they could not recognize some forensic cases. This situation has shown the importance of regu- larly updating the content of forensic midwifery education given to students. It is recommended that forensic midwifery training sho- uld be widespread at undergraduate and graduate levels and that forensic midwifery or expertise training should also be included as part of in-service training.
