This study aimed to reveal the probable anatomic differencesof the T13–L1 or L1–L2 vertebrae in Simmental and Brown Swisscattle during surgeries, such as subarachnoid anesthesia andcerebrospinal fluid aspiration, and thus determine a referencevalue. This study was conducted in 30 cows, of which 15 wereBrown Swiss cattle and 15 were Simmental, aged 5–6 years, and having a live weight of 400–450 kg. The region from theT13–L1 vertebrae to the sacrum was taken from each animaland divided into 2 equal parts throughout the long axis. Thedistance between the spinous processes of the T13–L1 and L1–L2 vertebrae, spinous processes length of the T13 and L1 vertebrae, sagittal length of interarcuate spaces between the T13–L1and L1–L2 vertebrae, and vertical length of vertebral canals ofthe T13 and L1 vertebrae were measured using an electronic digitalcaliper. Statistical results showed that although there wasno significant difference within the groups (p > .05), there wasa significant difference between the groups in terms of the sagittallength of interarcuate space between the T13–L1 vertebra(p < .05). We believe that this result is because of the anatomicaland genetic differences between the 2 cattle breeds.
