Effect ofCapparis spinosa on wound healing: A clinical and histomorphometric study in rat

Aim: Capparis spinose (C. Spinosa) contains flavanoids and quercetin monoliths showing antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiallergic, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties. The aim of this study was to investigate wound healing effects of Capparis Spinosa on rat palatal mucosa. Methods: Sixty male Wistar rats were used to study. Six animals were sacrificed at baseline as baseline wound (0 day). The rats were divided into three groups as C. Spinosa, Chlorhexidine (Clx) and Control (C). Subjects in all three groups were randomly selected to form nine subgroups consisting of six rats. Under anesthesia, circular excisional wound surfaces of 3 mm in diameter were formed by punching in the middle of the rat’s palate. The mucoperiosteal part was removed with sharp dissection and the area on the open bone surface was left to heal the secondary. C. Spinosa was locally administered at a rate of 1 ml/day. The rats were sacrificed on days seven, 14 and 21 and pictures of the wound area were taken. Each photograph was transferred to a special programe to measure the defect area. Histologic sections were taken and the presence of inflammatory cells, epithelization and healing levels were evaluated. Results: The mean wound area between the epithelial margins decreased significantly with time in all groups (p < 0.05). A significant rate of wound area reduction was observed following the use of C. Spinosaat seven, 14 and 21 days (respectively 6.43±0.65; 3.87±0.50; 0.94±0.39)compared to Clx and Control. On day 21, the inflammatory cells were observed still in control group. Conclusion: The findings of the study showed that C. Spinosa had a positive effect on the healing of soft tissue by accelerating wound healing.
