ÖZETDers kitapları geçmişte olduğu gibi günümüz coğrafya öğretiminin en önemli ve vazgeçilmez unsurlarından birisidir. Geçmişte daha ziyade olay ve nesnelerin tasviri bilgilerine yer veren coğrafya ders kitapları, günümüzde öğrencilere bilgi yüklemeden çok onların becerilerinin geliştirilmesi yönünde önemli kazanımlar sağlamaktadır. Özellikle günümüzün gelişmiş ülkelerinde örneklerini gördüğümüz şekli ile ders kitapları, coğrafya öğretiminde son yıllarda sıkça dile getirilen; öğrenci merkezli, projeye ve kritik düşünmeye dayalı eğitimin gerçekleşmesinde de büyük katkılar sağlamaktadır. Coğrafya ders kitaplarının günümüzdeki bu rolleri açısından bir değerlendirme yapıldığında, Türkiye’deki coğrafya ders kitaplarının birçok açıdan eksiklikler taşıdığı ve bu alanda köklü ve büyük değişikliklerin yapılması gerektiği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’deki coğrafya ders kitaplarının geliştirilmesine bir katkı sağlaması açısından, ABD’de ilk ve ortaöğretimde okutulan coğrafya ders kitaplarından bazıları şekil ve içerik olarak incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın merkezinde ise ABD Kaliforniya eyaletinde, Los Angeles okul bölgesinde, 6. sınıf öğrencilerine okutulan “Yer Bilimleri” kitabı ve bu kitabın eğitim seti ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiş ve tüm bu çalışmalar sonunda, Türkiye’de coğrafya ders kitapları ile ilgili ne gibi yeniliklere gidilmesi gerektiği konusunda bazı öneriler geliştirilmiştir. ABSTRACTAs it was the same in the past, textbooks are still one of the most important and indispensable components of geography education of today. They mostly contained descriptive information of event and objects in the past. However, today’s geography textbooks contribute to students’ succsess in many ways by giving them not only information but more importantly so many opportunities to improve their various skills. Especially with the samples that are mostly seen in today’s developed countries, textbooks have many contributions to developing student centred education based on project and critical thinking. If an evaluation is made in terms of these roles of geography textbooks, it appears that geography textbooks in Turkey include many deficiencies that require fundamental and serious changes in this field. In this study, some geography textbooks that are used in primary and secondary education in the USA were investigated as shape and content to make contibution to improvement of geography textbooks in Turkey. At the centre of this study, the book titled “Earth Sciences” and its education set that are being used for sixth year students in Los Angeles Unified School discrict in California were investigated in detail. Finally some suggestions were made about what kind of innovations need to be made regarding geography textbooks in Turkey at the end of the study.
