In this study we investigated the effects of octreotide, a synthetic anologue of somatostatin, on experimental colitis. Colitis was induced by administrating 2 ml 5% acetic acid through the anus. Animals were divided into 4 groups: sham group, control group, acetic acid group and acetic acid+ octreotide group. Twenty-four hours after acetic acid application, a laparatomy was perfomed and a 10 cm segment of colon proximal to the anus was resected and examined macroscopically and histopathologically. Colitis was mild in the octreotide recieved group compared to the non octreotide group. The mechanism of octreotide on colitis is unclear. We concluded that is usefulness in colitis needs further study.
