Nevşehir ve yakın çevresi önemli ölçüde farklı litolojilerde volkanik şekil ve birimlerden oluşur. Volkanik rölyef; kentin alansal gelişiminde, arazi kullanımında ve Türkiye’nin en önemli turizm bölgelerinden olan Kapadokya peribacalarının oluşumunda da etkili olmuştur. Volkanik yapı ve birimlerin hem kent üzerindeki etkisi hem de peribacalarının oluşumu üzerindeki etkisinin araştırılması amacıyla sahada bir dizi çalışma gerçekleştirilerek sayısal ve jeomorfoloji haritaları diyagramlar, volkanik terselme inversion kuralına göre jeomorfolojik evrim modeli geliştirilmiştir. Nevşehir çevresinin jeomorfolojik gelişiminde dikkat çeken en önemli hususlar hem tektonik, hem de volkanik etkilerle gerçekleşen polisiklik çok evreli gelişim seyri ve farklı aşınmaya bağlı olarak ortaya çıkan topoğrafik terselme olaylarıdır. Bu nedenle şehir ve yakın çevresinde rölyefte bir zenginlik göze çarpar volkanik domlar, volkanik platolar, volkan konileri, trap, volkanik terselme basamakları, fay basamakları, fay aynaları, mesalar, şahit tepeler, peribacaları vs .Aktif morfoloji olarak günümüzde sahada Kızılırmak ve kollarının etkisine bağlı olarak daha çok fluviyal aşındırma süreci hâkimdir. Bu süreç litolojik faktörlerin de etkisi ile selektif aşındırma ile yarıntı erozyonu şeklinde ortaya çıkan badlands topoğrafyası ve oldukça zengin, aynı zamanda çok çeşitli peribacalarının oluşumuna neden olmuştur

Nevşehir and its surroundings significantly consist of volcanic landforms and units in different lithologies. Volcanic relief has been influential in the city's spatial development, land use and the formation of fairy chimneys of Cappadocia which is one of Turkey's most important tourism zone.In order to investigate the impact of volcanic structures and lithological units on both the city and the formation of fairy chimneys, a series of studies performed to digital maps, geomorphology maps, diagrams, geomorphological evolution model according to the inversion rule have been developed.The most important points that draw attention to the geomorphological development of Nevşehir environment are the polycyclic multi-stage development course which is realized by both tectonic and volcanic effects and the topographical inversion events which occur due to different wear. Therefore, there is an affluence of relief in the city and its surroundings volcanic domes, volcanic plateaus, volcanic cones, trap, volcanic inversion steps, fault steps, fault mirrors, structural hills, witness hills, fairy chimneys, etc. .As active morphology today, fluvial erosion process predominates in the area due to the influence of Kızılırmak and its tributaries. This process resulted in the formation of Badlands topography which occurs as in the form of selective erosion and crevice erosion with the effect of lithological factors and has also caused the formation of a wide variety and quite rich fairy chimneys
