Effect of number of step-feed on nitrogen removal performance in anoxic-aerobic sequencing batch reactor

In this study, the effect of step-feed number on the nitrogen removal performance of anoxic-aerobic sequencing batch reactor was investigated. Two, three and four step-feeds were chosen as the number of feeds, each of which was run in different reactors (R1, R2 and R3) respectively. The number of step-feeds did not affect COD removal efficiency. The NH4+-N removal efficiencies in R1, R2 and R3 are 95%, 97% and 91%, respectively. The total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency was found to be 84%, 88% and 85% in R1, R2 and R3, respectively. In terms of nitrogen removal efficiency, better results were obtained with three step-feed, and it was found that the number of step-feed was an important operating parameter for nitrogen removal.
