GREEN PURCHASING AND GREEN SUPPLIER SELECTION: AN APPLICATION IN THE WHITE GOODS SECTOR

The increasing speed of technological advancement in recent years, allows companies to offer more varieties and quantities of products to the market in shorter periods. While this creates an opportunity for the companies that want to gain competitive advantage, the fact that the demands do not increase at the same rate with supply and the consumers become more conscious and sensitive, puts these companies in an intense competitive environment. Due to the negative effects of climate change, the rapid depletion of natural resources, increased environmental pollution, etc., environmental awareness in the society increases. As a result, majority of the consumers tend to prefer more environmentally friendly products, the media and non-governmental organizations become more sensitive to environmental issues, and governments put more regulations on environmental protection. All these conditions force companies to be environmentally conscious at all stages throughout the product life cycle, which, in turn, means taking the necessary steps to reduce all kinds of resources used in production, reconfiguring the production processes, using environmentally friendly packaging materials and transportation methods and considering reuse issues. At this point, there is a significant improvement potential in purchasing process, which is the first stage of the product life cycle, and the selection of the most suitable supplier becomes one of the most important issues. For this reason, this study aims to propose a decision making model for green supplier selection to apply this model in one of the biggest white goods manufacturers in Turkey.
