İzrapoğlu Abdullah Necip Efendinin oğlu olarak 1883’te Gaziantep’te doğdu. 1906 yılında Tıp Fakültesine girdi. 1914’de Tıp Fakültesi’nden mezun oldu. Genel cerrahi ihtisası yaptı. Çanakkale harbi yaralılarının tedavisinde çalıştı. Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nın sonuna kadar Gülhane, Etfal hastanelerinde ve Darülaceze’de görev yaptı. Antlaşmadan sonra Gaziantep’e geldi. Antep Harbi’nde savaş hastanesinin tek operatörü olarak aylarca görev yaptı. Mecit Barlas Gaziantep’in ilk cerrahı olarak çalıştı. Cumhuriyet döneminde de Gaziantep’in ilk özel hastanesi Mecit Barlas Hastanesi idi. Bu hastanede 1918’den 1935 yılına kadar göz ve nisaiye ameliyatları dâhil her türlü ameliyatı yaptı. Seksen yaşına kadar durmadan çalıştı. 1969 yılında 86 yaşında hayata veda etti. Bu çalışmada Gaziantep’in Sağlık Tarihi içinde yer alan Doktor Mecit Barlas’ın hekimlik kimliği ile birlikte Gaziantep şehrine yaptığı hizmetleri kendi anıları doğrultusunda incelenmeye çalışılacaktır.

He was born in Gaziantep as son of Abdullah Necip Efendi in 1883. He studied medicine between 1906-1914. He became a specialist on general surgery. He worked during the Çanakkale war and until the end of 1.World War; he worked in Gülhane, Etfal and many other hospitals. After the concordat, he came back to Gaziantep. During the war in Gaziantep, he worked as the only surgent in the war area hospital for months. He was the first surgent of Gaziantep so they named the first private hospital of the city after him. He worked from 1918 to 1935 in this hospital doing lots of surgeries including eye and gynaecology. He worked until he is 80 and in 1969 when he was 86, he ğassed away. In this study, we will analyse Dr. Mecit Barlas in the history of health and medicine and the things he had done for Gaziantep through his own memories
