Evaluation of patients admitted to the intensive care unit from the emergency department
To determine the factors affecting mortality and transfer time in patients admitted from the emergency department to the intensive care unit (ICU). This study was designed as a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital. For patients who were transferred to ICU from the emergency department, the hospital records regarding waiting times in the emergency department, type of ICU admitted, diagnoses/symptoms, demographic characteristics, presence of cardiac arrest at presentation and clinical outcomes were recorded. During the study period, a total of 1.621 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit from the emergency department. The majority of these patients (61%) were male. After admission to the intensive care unit, 12.9% of the patients died.
