Decent Work Model in the Context of Psychology of Working Theory

The Psychology of Working Theory was developed to examine the working experiences of people with limited economic resources who were discriminated in their lifetimes. The Decent Work term is situated in the theory’s center and it is proposed that there are contextual and psychological factors affecting access to jobs that fit in the Decent Work. This study aims to test the Decent Work Model as suggested by the Psychology of Working Theory on working Turkish adults. In the study, 351 participants filled out the economic constraints scale, lifetime experiences of marginalization scale, work volition scale and decent work scale. For data analysis, the path analysis method was used. According to the analysis result, economic constraints and marginalization predicted work volition and decent work to be negative and significant, whereas work volition predicted decent work to be positive and significant, and %38 of the change in decent work is explained by other variables. Furthermore, the mediator role of work volition between contextual factors and decent work was found to be significant. Result were discussed on the basis of literature, and suggestions for practice were developped.
