EFFECTS OF JUGLONE APPLIED IN PREGERMINATIVE STAGE ON GROWTH OF CUCUMBER SEEDLINGS WITH RESPECT TO PHYSIOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL PARAMETERS

Effects of juglone on seedling growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Beith Alpha) with respect to physiological and anatomical parameters were investigated. Growth parameters (seedling elongation, fresh and dry weights) were reduced by 1 mM juglone. At the same time, juglone decreased xylem vessel and bundle radius of stem, and number and length of stomata of the cotyledons. But increases in thickness of the cotyledon mesophyll were found. In addition, juglone caused to decrease in protein and chlorophyll content and catecholase and tyrosinase activities. Growth inhibitory effect of juglone was discussed to be related to reduce in anatomic structures such as xylem vessel and stomata rather than the chlorophyll content and the enzyme activities.
