Arap kabilelerinden Ezd’i konu edinerek hazırlanmış, Brian Ulrich’inWisconsin Üniversitesi’nde tamamlamış olduğu doktora tezine (2008) dayananbu kitabının temel argümanı farklı zaman ve mekanlarda, farklı anlamlarkazansa da “el-Ezd” kimliğinin İslam öncesi dönemlerden Abbâsî döneminekadar var olmasıdır. Yazar eserinde İslam tarihinin belirli bir dönemindeolan olayları Ezd kabilesi üzerinden anlamaya çalışmış ve bu olaylarda Ezdkabilesinin siyasi ve sosyal yönünü tartışmıştır. Öne çıkan en önemli yaklaşımıve farklı sayılabilecek metodu ise kabileyi bir kimlik biçimi olarak ele almasıdır.Bu doğrultuda ulaştığı sonuç, Abbâsîlere uzanan Arap toplumunda kabilekimliği ile sosyal yapı arasında zannedilenden daha etkili bir sürekliliğin varolduğudur. Bu tanıtım yazısında yazarın konuyu ele alış biçimi, başvurduğukaynaklar, çalışmanın sınırlılıkları ve çalışmanın genel değerlendirilmesi yeralacaktır.

This book, which has been prepared on one of the Arab tribes al-Azd, and consists of an introduction and five chapters, is based on Brian Ulrich’s dissertation (2008) at the University of Wisconsin. The main argument is that “al-Azd” identity existed from pre-Islamic times into the Abbasid period. However, the meaning of that identity had been changed in various periods and places. In his study, the author tried to understand the events in a certain period of Islamic history through the Azd tribe and discussed the political and social aspects of the Azd tribe in these events. The method that should be considered as the most original side of the study, is the tribe has been regarded as a form of identity. The conclusion he reached with this method is, there had been a more effective continuity between the tribal identity and social structure in Arab society. In this review, the author’s plan, the sources, the limits of the study will be discussed.
