İLERLEME’ KAVRAMI ÜZERİNE TARİHSEL BİR İNCELEME

Bu çalışmanın amacı ilerleme kavramının anlam ve tarihsel kökenini araştırmaktır. Bu maksatla öncelikle tarihsel perspektifte Antik Yunan düşüncesinden başlayarak Ortaçağ Hristiyan Dünyası, Modern dönem, Aydınlanma dönemi ve XIX. yüzyıla kadar olan süreçte ilerleme kavramının anlam ve kökenine ilişkin öne sürülen tezler ortaya konulmuştur. Daha sonra bu tezler ilerleme kavramının etimolojik çözümlemesi ile mukayese edilerek bir sonuca varılmıştır. Bu sonuca göre ‘ilerleme’ kavramının sanılanın aksine ilk kez modern dönemde değil de, Ortaçağ Hristiyan dünyasında karakterize olduğu söylenebilir

An Historical Investigation on the Concept of Progress

The aim of this study is to investigate the historical origins and meaning of the concept of progress. I first try to put forward the theses concerning the meaning and origin of the concept of progress in a historical perspective begining from the Ancient Greek thoughts, through the Mediavel Christian world, the Modern era, Enlightenment and, up to the XIX. century . Then I reach a conclusion by comparing these theses with etymological analysis of the concept of progress. According to this conclusion, contrary to popular belief , it will be claimed that the concept of progress emerged for the first time in Mediavel Christian world and not in the Modern era
