Foreign Banks and Banking Crisis: Empirical Evidence From Turkey

Yükselen piyasa ekonomilerinde yabancıbankaların mevcudiyetinin artmasıyla birlikte,literatürde yabancı bankaların ev sahibi ülkeekonomisi üzerindeki etkileri konusunda datartışmalar başlamıştır. Çalışmamız yabancıbankaların etkileri konusundaki literatüreTürkiyeden ampirik kanıt sunarak katkıdabulunmaktadır. Çalışmamız Türkiyedeki yabancıve ulusal bankaların finansal kriz dönemlerindedavranışlarını incelemektedir. Türkiyedekibankaların verileri kullanılarak, yabancıbankaların kriz dönemlerinde kredi istikrarınakatkıda bulunup bulunmadığı ve yabancı bankasahipliği ile bir bankanın batma olasılığı arasındabir korelasyon olup olmadığı araştırılmıştır.Ampirik araştırmamız yabancı bankaların krizdönemlerinde kredi istikrarına daha fazla katkıdabulunduğuna ve Türk bankacılık sektöründekiyabancı sahipliğinin bankaların batma olasılığınıazalttığına işaret etmektedir.

Yabancı Bankalar ve Bankacılık Krizi: Türkiye den Ampirik Kanıt

As the role of f oreign banks in emerging marketsincreased, a debate which f ocuses on the impactof f oreign banks on the host country hasdeveloped. Our paper contributes to thisliterature by presenting empirical evidence f romTurkey. Our paper investigates the behavior off oreign and domestic banks in Turkey duringf inancial crisis period. Using bank level data f orTurkey, we investigate whether f oreign bankscontribute to the stability of credit during theperiods of crisis and whether there is a correlationbetween foreign ownership and a bank slikelihood of f ailure. Our empirical investigationindicates that f oreign banks contribute to thegreater stability of credit during the periods ofcrisis and f oreign ownership in the banking sectorreduces the probability of bank f ailure in Turkey.
