Türk dilleri akrabalık bildiren terimler açısından oldukça zengindir. Bu terimlerin çoğu farklı lehçelerde çok farklı biçimlerde kullanılmaktadır. Zaman içerisinde oluşan tüm anlamsal değişimler boyunca akrabalık terimlerinde iki temel özellik ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bunlardan biri kız kardeşler ya da erkek kardeşler için yaygın bir terimin bulunmaması, diğeri ise farklı nesillere ait kişiler için aynı kelimelerin kullanılmasıdır. Bu çalışmada, eski Türk akrabalık sisteminin ana ilkelerini yeniden düzenleme girişiminde bulunulmuş ve sistemin genel bir taslağı sunulmaya çalışılmıştır. Akrabalık terimleri ile tanımlanan nesillerin aileye bağlı olan her birey için farklı biçimde sınıflandırıldığı görülmüştür.

Turkic languages are very rich in kinship terms. Many of these terms are used in very different ways in different dialects. Throughout all the semantic changes that occur in the course of time, two basic features have emerged in kinship terms. One of these is that there is no common term for sisters or brothers, and the other one is that the same words are used for the persons from different generations. In this study, the attempt has been made to reorganize the main principles of the system of the old Turkish kinship terms and the general outline of the system has been tried to be presented. It has been observed that generations defined in kinship terms are classified differently for each individual connected to the family.
