Evaluation of Dietary Boron in terms of Health: A Retrospective Study

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to calculate the amount of dailyboron intake according to the daily nutrition diary and to evaluate the effects of boronon health via the results of some biochemical and hematological parameters. Methods: A total of 50 patients who were admitted to the Maltepe Ersoy HospitalNutrition and Diet Clinic, had some biochemical and hematological examinations, hada weekly nutrition diary, and had anthropometric records were included in the presentstudy. The relationships between daily boron intake and biochemical, hematological, and anthropometric records of the patients were examined. Results: The average daily boron intake was calculated as 1.45±0.4 (women:1.4±0.4 and men: 1.5±0.5) mg/day and was mostly found in fruits. There was asignificant and negative correlation between body mass index and daily boron intake(r=−0.3555, p=0.05); however, no significant relationship was found between dailyboron intake level and other parameters. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study in the literature that presentsthe dietary boron level in Turkey and also examines the relationship between dietaryboron level and biochemical and hematological parameters retrospectively. Theresults of our study could provide useful information and contribution to ongoing boronstudies.
