Comparing of using dehydrated borax and sodium metaborate as borate source for sodium borohydride production in vibrating ball mill
In this study, production of sodium borohydride (SBH) which is one of special boron compounds was investigated by using dehydrated borax and sodium metaborate as a boron source. Stainless steel vibration ball mill reactor that has 45 ml volume was used for SBH production experiments. A process based on Mg element was selected for production of SBH. The experiments have carried out in batch system under the conditions which are at 412 °C temperature, at 29 atm initial reaction pressure, at 10 Hz (600 rpm) vibration rate and at 150 min reaction time. Qualitative analyses were conducted with FTIR and quantitative analyses were conducted with iodimety method that supply direct measurement of amount of produced SBH. Sodium metaborate which was at the same experiment conditions with dehydrated borax was used in an experiment as a borate compound for comparison. It was found that production of SBH was similar for both experiments. The SBH production yield in terms of using dehydrated borax obtained as % 17.1 and in terms of using sodium metaborate obtained as % 17.9. Such low values found both two conditions was attributed to decrease contact surface area between Mg and H- (protide) because of using huge size Mg metal (175 μm) as a reactant. through other studies
