Regional Input-Output Analysis of A Mega-Event: Possible Impact of EXPO on Izmir Economy

Öz Izmir has lost the bid for EXPO 2020. Izmir’s expectationswere high, but to the best information of theauthors, these expectations were never systematicallyquantified. This article quantifies the expected expendituresrelated to a mega event in Izmir due to i) additionalhotel constructions, and, ii) arrival of foreignvisitors. Then, the effects of these additional expenditureson regional economy are examined through aclosed regional I-O model, where closure is due to en�-dogenized consumption expenditures. The calculationsare based on a regional I-O table of İzmir, availablefrom İzmir Regional Development Agency IZKA. It isobserved that constructions related to a mega event requireconsiderable recycling imports, due to scrap metaldependency of metal production.
