The effect of vermicompost and chicken manure on yield and quality of summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Sakiz) and some soil chemical properties

In this study, potential utilization of vermicompost and chicken manure in summer squash growing (Cucurbita pepo L.cv. Sakiz) and their effect on some soil chemical properties were investigated. The study was conducted in open field conditions with randomized block design with four replicates. Treatments included control (K); vermicompost VK100= 100 kg da-1 , VK200= 200 kg da-1 , and VK400= 400 kg da-1 ; chicken manure TG300= 300 kg da-1 , and TG600= 600 kg da-1 . At the end of the experiment, pH values were found to be lower in soils treated with vermicompost and chicken manure compared to the control. On the other hand, EC and organic matter contents of soils amended with organic fertilizers were significantly higher than those of the control soil. The increase in EC values did not occur in a level to cause any salinity problem. Total N, available P, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations in soils increased with application of vermicompost and chicken manure compared to the control. Exchangeable K, Ca, Mg, and available Cu contents, however, did not show any significant change. The vermicompost treatment VK400 and chicken manure treatments TG300 and TG600 showed significant positive effects on yield (total yield, early yield, number of plant and fruit, average fruit weight) and quality (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade), and soil chemical properties.
