Mean Platelet Volume in Obese Prepubertal Children
Objective: Mean platelet volume MPV , a marker of platelet activation, has been found to be associated with obesity and cardiovascular diseases in adults. However, only a few studies thus far have investigated the relationship between MPV and obesity during childhood. The aim of this crosssectional study was to compare the MPV values of obese prepubertal children with those of healthy controls.Material and Methods: Fifty-one prepubertal children aged 6 to 10.5 years diagnosed with obesity at the pediatric endocrinology clinic and 46 healthy prepubertal children with normal weight were enrolled in this study. Results: Platelet count, MPV and platelet distribution width PDW did not differ signifi cantly between the patient and control groups p>0.05 . There was no correlation between any of these three parameters and the body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, blood sugar, insulin, thyroid function tests, liver function tests and lipid profi le p>0.05 . Conclusion: Mean platelet volume does not seem to be associated with obesity in children. There is a need for large scale prospective studies in the pediatric age group to support this finding
