Poulantzas, belli bir soyutlama düzeyinden hareketle bir toplumsal oluşumun analizini “siyasal,” “ideolojik” ve “ekonomik” düzeyler arasında kurduğu göreli özerk ilişkiler temelinde kuramsallaştırmaya çalıştı. Böylece devlet, göreli özerk bir niteliğe bürünmüş bir şekilde, bir toplumsal oluşumun “birliğini” ve “tutunumunu” sağlayan bir sınıf aygıtı olarak kavranmış oluyordu. Poulantzas tried to conceptualize a social formation analysis at a certain abstraction level based on relatively autonomous relations that he built between “political,” “ideological” and “economic” levels. Thus, the state was comprehended as a class apparatus that maintains the ‘‘unity’’ and ‘‘coherence’’ of a social formation nestled in a relatively autonomous nature. Although Poulantzas developed the fundamental problematic, which is focused on the capitalist state, in connection with a wide range of different areas of study such as “ruling class,” “state-member elite,” “state apparatus,” “class power,” “state power,” “production mode” and “permanent effective”, the theoretical background of this study was the notion of “relative autonomy” of the state. The fundamental objective of this study is to discuss and assess the capitalist state problematic based on the political polemics that occurred between Poulantzas, Miliband and Laclau
