Observation of the Effect of an Innovative Course Method on Student Attendance Dimensions in Vocational School: Professional Development Activity Course Example

The main aim of higher education is to train qualified workforce for different occupations. However, unlike the four-year faculties and colleges of the universities, Vocational Schools are obliged to provide vocational and technical education to the students in both theoretical and practical terms with a two-year education period. Therefore, the course contents and course styles of the Vocational Schools should be different from the classical courses. The main aim of this study is to change the content and format of the course called Vocational Professional Development Activity that students take for graduation in the Vocational Schools, and to examine each of the active, emotional, cognitive and behavioral participation dimensions of the students separately and to investigate the effect of the course on an innovative course method. The mentioned course has been transformed into an innovative lesson method, far from the traditional education structure. Focus group work has been done in shaping and evaluating the innovation process of the course. When all student participation dimensions were analyzed in the innovation process, it was found that they showed the highest rate of emotional participation after behavioral participation, then active participation and finally cognitive participation.
