Survivor Syndrome

During recent years downsizing has become an increasingly popular organizational tool as a result of global competition and economic crisis that has been lived through. To increase their profitability and maintain their competitiveness organizations are at first choosing to reduce their workforce. While the organizations are implementing different strategies to take care of the employees who are losing their jobs, the needs of the employees staying at the workplace are overlooked. However, the organizations should be very careful in preventing the survivor syndrome as the future success of the organization depends on these survivors and their commitment to the organization. Therefore, to minimize the negative outcomes related with survivor syndrome organizations should consider the needs of the survivors long before the implementation of the downsizing strategy.
