Every manager is involved in decision-making for achieving organizational objectives; that is, they must choose between several ways of action in an uncertain future. In order to make the right decision, relevant information is needed. The value of information increases as the degree of uncertainty, size of the market and the contribution level increases. But most of the time information is not attainable or there is no source or time to obtain it, and decisions will be based on subjective evaluations. The concept of utility provides the foundation for the solution of decision-making problems in the presence of risk preference or aversion. Given certain assumptions, it is possible to show that the rational decision maker will choose the action for which expected utility is highest. Here, the utility can be measured by the preference for risk and aversion to risk. In this article, some of the historical and modern theories on utility measurement are reviewed and a solution jm'-a practical management problem in a holiday village is discussed.
