Is the thyroid function a risk factor for obesity?

We wanted to investigate the relationship between circulating TSH levels and adiposity in obese people. We asked about thyroid dysfunctions in history of obese patients. It was determined euthyroid, hypothroid, hyperthyroid subjects. Retrospective analysis was carried out on 257 obese (VK􀃸>30 kg/m2, 230 women, 27 men), 197 over-weight patients (VK􀃸 25-30 kg/m2, 196 women, 1 man), 190 control healthy group (VK􀃸<25 kg/m2,189 women, 1 man), total 644 subject. TSH, free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), fasting plasma levels of insulin and glucose, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) body weight, height, body mass index (VK􀃸) and waist circumference were assessed. Hypothyroid subjects were found 20 in obese group, 28 in control group as subclinic hypothyroid, 8 in obese group, 5 in control group as manifest hypothyroid. Serum TSH levels were higher in the obese than in the control subjects. In the study group (control and obese subjects), there was a significant positive correlation between serum TSH and body weight, waist circumference, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR, there was no correlation between serum FT4 and any of the parameters. A multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that only VK􀃸 contributed significantly to the variance of TSH. We reached this result that TSH is a risk factor in obesity as independent from the thyroid functions.
