Serum uric acid levels in obese women

Hyperuricemia is known as an independent risk factor for renal dysfunction in the normal population and in patients with hypertension or diabetes. The purpose of this study is to examine the contribution of obesity to uric acid levels in patents. A prospective study was performed in 644 female, with a mean age of 51±9.7 years. The patients were divided into three groups according to their body mass index levels as; obese (BMI:over 30) (n:387), over-weight group (BMI:25-29.9) (n: 257) and normal weight control group (BMI:18.5-24.9) (n:196). Uric acid and creatinine levels were significantly higher in obese than control and over-weight groups. In conclusion, higher uric acid levels in obese patients indicate on increased cardiovascular disease risk and oxidative stress. This particular finding is also important in development of chronic renal failure in obese individuals which in turn may increase morbidity and mortality.
