Bulgular: Hastaların ortalama yaşı sırasıyla A grubunda (79 erkek, 64 kadın) 55,3±10,2 ve B grubunda 54,2± 4,3 (47 erkek, 39 kadın) idi. A grubunda 14 (%9,8) has-tada, B grubunda ise 7 (%8,1) hastada PES tespit edildi.

Frequency of pseudoexfoliation syndrome in patients who underwent coronary bypass surgery

Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) is characte-rized by the deposition of exfoliation material (EM) on ocular tissues. There is the question of a possible link between the presence of PES and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of PES in patients who underwent coronary bypass (CB) surgery. Material and Method: The study included 143 patients who underwent CB surgery (group A) and 86 patients with normal coronary angiography (group B). The study was performed as a single blinded study. Detailed ophthalmic examination was performed. The patients who had the typical deposits on the anterior lens capsule and the pupillary border were considered as PES. Results: Mean age was 55.3±10.2 in group A (79 men and 64 women) and 54.2±4.3 in group B (47 men and 39 women), respectively. Fourteen patients (9.8%) in Group A and 7 patients (8.1%) in Group B were found to have PES. In terms of age, sex distribution and the frequency of PES, there was no statistical significance between the groups (p>0.05). When patients were regrouped with respect to the presence of PES, age was the only parameter to be different between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The frequency of PES in patients who underwent CB surgery is not different from patients without coronary artery disease.
