Hemophilic arthropathy and rehabilitation

Hemophilia is a chronic, hereditary bleeding disorder. Repeated intra-articular bleeding results in progressive cartilage destruction and disability. Three periods in the development of hemophilic arthropathy are defined. The recurrent bleeding period, the chronic synovitis period, and the fibrosis and contractures period also called last period. Rehabilitation approach to joint problems developing in hemophilia, varies depending on the severity and the period of disease. Appropriate medical treatment and exercise programs should be arranged to prevent the emergence of joint problems, or in order to keep an acceptable level of disease. Preventive home exercise program for all patients and aggressive rehabilitation program in patients whom require rehabilitation therapy should be applied for the mobilization of the patients.
