Current approaches in the treatment of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by widespread body pain and presence of tender points. The treatment of fibromyalgia is quite difficult. Drug therapy, patient education, cognitive and behavioral treatment, physical therapy and hydrotherapy applications, exercise and acupuncture practices are the main pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods used in the treatment of fibromyalgia. When the randomized controlled studies on the effectiveness of these treatments are evaluated, it is shown that a multimodal treatment approach should be targeted including the combination of patient education, cognitive and behavioral therapy, tricyclic antidepressants such as low dose amitriptyline and cyclobenzaprine, aerobic exercise and strengthening exercise.
