THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON THE EDUCATION PROCESS: BEING A PARENT IN QUARANTINE DAYS

In this research, the effects of Covid-19 on the education process and the studies to ensure the sustainability of education were examined in line with the opinions of the parents. The study group of the research, which is designed in the phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, consists of parents whose children are studying in primary, secondary and high schools. The data collected from the parents using open-ended questions were analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the research findings, parents perceive Covid-19 as a situation that negatively affects both human health and the environmental and social order. In addition, parents worried about not being able to provide sufficient educational support to their children during the holidays, and stated that their children's learning motivation decreased. On the other hand, in this process, it was stated that the distance education system, where educational activities were carried out on a national scale, had some positive aspects such as preventing students from falling behind from their lessons and giving students responsibility, as well as some negativities such as insufficient content and short course periods. A number of factors, such as the quality of the system, the high cost of the system, and the concerns about the negativity of the virtual environment, affect whether the parents prefer distance education programs in the future. Finally, some participants reported that during the quarantine days, they carried out various activities such as painting and cooking with their children to contribute not only to their academic development but also to their sociocultural development. In line with these findings obtained from the research, in order to minimize the negative effects of the pandemic, some suggestions were offered in the form of providing psychological counseling services to the parents in need, as well as the development and dissemination of existing distance education systems.
