PERCEPTIONS ABOUT COUNTRIES OF THE STUDENTS LEARNING TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

The individual recognizes himself/herself as a separate entity from other living and non-living entities that exist; he/she tends to make sense of space, events/circumstances, relationships lived. Over time, this tendency is that of the individual; with the influence of the acquired education, living conditions, age and experiences, provide a basis for the perceptions of senior mental process skills such as commenting, comparison, association, criticism and evaluation. These perceptions also shape the meaning of the world and the countries. This research was conducted to determine the perceptions of Turkish learners as a foreign language about world countries. Descriptive research is preferred in this study. The study group is composed of 23 foreign students studying Turkish at Adnan Menderes University Turkish Language Teaching, Research and Application Center (ADÜ-TÖMER) in the academic year 2017-2018. The research data were gathered through the world map of the A3 size, only the country names were written. Through the arrows extracted from the countries in the map, students were required to write their connotations/perceptions related to those countries in Turkish or in English. Descriptive analysis technique was used to analyze the obtained data. As a result, the foreign students indicated their perceptions and interpretations on a total of 29 countries on the world map. Turkey (f: 14) and the USA (f: 8) has the most commonly reported opinions. These are followed by Canada (f: 3). Germany, Israel, Italy, Azerbaijan, China, Japan, and Australia each held 2 answers; for the remaining 19 countries, the views were expressed only once. Formation of these views is based on evaluations on dualist (friend-enemy, good- bad, meaningfull-meaningless etc.), political approach and prosperity, culture and geographical location perspectives.
