FEEDBACK TYPES USED BY TEACHERS OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AT TEACHING PROCESSES: A MICRO-ANALYSIS ON EARLY CHILDHOOD FOREIGN LANGUAGES EDUCATION
The focus of this research is the feedbacks that are used by teachers of English in their learning-teaching processes. The rationale for the research is the fact that the feedbacks are considered very important in learning-teaching processes. There are many classifications of feedbacks in the related field. The study is structured on Schimmel’s (1988) classification due to the fact that classroom interaction, which is a part of the research, is more applicative to the microanalysis method. The objective of this research is to do comparative analyses in foreign language education in the early childhood by identifying the types of feedbacks that are used by teachers in their teaching processes. The aim is to analyze the different types of feedbacks used by both native and non- native teachers at five-year-old grade in English language teaching classes. Based on this purpose, the feedbacks that are used by native Turkish speaking and native English speaking teachers have been compared. As a result, various conclusions have been made. The research has been designed in case study pattern, which is a form of qualitative research. The classroom interactions of the teachers have been examined by micro-level analysis, through a month-long video recording (4 hours of class). The research has been conducted at a foreign language class which has been given by two English teachers and their students from the age group of 5 in a private educational institution in Muğla Province, the district of Menteşe after the required permissions have been obtained. The data have been collected via observations, video- audio recordings, interviews, checklists and field notes. The collected data has been analyzed and interpreted via "Transana 3.01" software, in compliance with discourse analysis method. Based on the results, it has been found that both teachers in the study group commonly use affirmative feedback type. Nevertheless, it has been observed that neither of them uses diagnostic feedback type. Various suggestions and implications have been made based on the results of the study.
