DICTIONARIES AND DICTIONARY USERS: WHICH DICTIONARY IS FOR WHOM

Over the last fifty years, there has been a tremendous increase in dictionary types with the advancement of dictionary research and information technology. During this period, dictionary types such as monolingual, bilingual, multilingual, translation, term, pictorial, printed, electronic, children, learner dictionaries were presented to users. Researches show that users find it difficult to select the appropriate source for their needs from within this broad dictionary types, and often cannot find the right one. Therefore, users who apply for dictionaries to remove the question marks in their heads get inaccurate, incomplete information or they cannot access the information they have searched for because they cannot go to the correct source. In order to remove this undesirable situation, it is necessary to explain "monolingual, bilingual, bilingualized, printed, electronic" dictionary types generally that users frequently encounter and to show which dictionary should be consulted by whom in which case. For this purpose, previous studies with document analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and sources related to the field were examined in the context of the problem culprit, "Which dictionary should be used by whom in which case?", and from the obtained findings, dictionary types have been defined, compared with each other, and it has been described who should consult to which dictionary. Besides, it also shows who the users are and when they apply to the dictionary. To achieve this, it is determined who the users are and when they apply to the dictionary, and the superior (advantages) and weak (disadvantages) sides of the dictionary in which they encounter are explained. In the last part, various suggestions have been made so that users can make "right dictionary selection"
