PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ METAPHORIC PERCEPTIONS OF CONCEPTS RELATED WITH MATHEMATICS
This study aims to determine pre-service class teachers’ perceptions related to “learning mathematics”, “teaching mathematics” and “student disable to learn mathematics” through the use of metaphors. For this purpose, the pre-service class teachers at fourth grade level of two state universities from Turkey were selected for the study, during the second half of 2012-2013 educational year. Firstly, a power point slideshow about the metaphors and the aim of the study was presented to pre-service students and the requirements from them for the present were explained in detail. Then, an instrument prepared by the authors and composed of three sentences was applied within a lecture hour. In the later stage, each participant was asked to complete the prompts of “learning mathematics is like…….. because…..”, “teaching mathematics is like…….because…….”, “student disable to learn mathematics is like ……because….”. The results illustrated that although the preservice class teachers could generate similar numbers of metaphors about “teaching mathematics” (46 metaphors) and “learning mathematics” (45 metaphors), they could generate less numbers of the metaphors related with the “student disable to mathematics” (39 metaphors). The leading categories appeared as “life itself”, “preparation for life” together with “process” and “the passive individual” for the concepts of “learning mathematics”, “teaching mathematics” and “students disable to learn”, respectively. It can be concluded from the results of the study, the preservice teachers regard the teaching and learning mathematics as a job mostly related with life. It may also be concluded that the preservice teachers perceive that the students but not the teachers are responsible for the situation of “disable to learn mathematics”
