THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A DEVELOPED SCENARIO CONCERNING ‘PROTEINS’ TOPIC FOR THE ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE LEVEL STUDENTS: PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING
The aim of this study was to develop a scenario based on problem- based learning (PBL) concerning the topic of ‘Proteins’ for the course of Basic Biochemistry and to investigate the effect of PBL on the academic achievement of students about the relevant topic. The research was one- group pre-test post-test design and the study group consisted of first grade students (N=67) studying Medical Laboratory Techniques and Medical Promotion Marketing Associate’s Degree Programs at Ahmet Erdogan Vocational School of Health Services at Bulent Ecevit University. The application was implemented for 15 course hours in the spring semester of the 2015-2016 academic year.In this study, it was developed a scenario titled ‘Who is the Killer?’ oriented the topic of ‘Proteins’. The scenario included the sub-topics of the structures, classifications of proteins and amino acids, bond structure of protein, the digestion and absorption of proteins in the body, essential amino acids, denaturation of proteins, the acidic and basic properties of amino acids, the purification methods of proteins and the elucidation of amino acid sequence within a polypeptide chain.‘Proteins Achievement Test (PAT)’ and the ‘Structured Interview Form’ were used as data collection tools. PAT test was carried out as pre-test and post-test. Wilcoxon test was used statistically whether there was a significant difference between pre- and post-test scores. The analysis results indicated that there was a significant difference between PAT pre- and post-test scores of students. The results of content analysis of the structured interview form which was carried out at the end of the application showed that students had positive views concerning that the scenario and education sessions were appropriate and in association with daily life.
