NATIONALISM

19th century was era of great and effective breakups in scientific and cultural meanings. In this period which science showed progress in the focal point of physical sciences, datas from race (genetics), climate, geography centered at metodology of social sciences. Within this perspective which is compulsary in modern society, some sociological problems revealed. In this present study, negative perception of the fact which is called “nationalism” will be focused. Nationalism in this context can be described as human’s usage of the other people’s differences from creation against them. This bad trait spreads between persons cunningly first then causes divide and collapse of societies. “Nationalism” which based superiority of cultural features of race, lineage, tribe, kin, sect, language, belief, etc, breeds bad blood in gender, group and team conflicts. This point of view which runs on the epic features of persons’, lost its scientific feature then turns into sociological ‘gangrane’. This problem which involves societies of the world in various points, has special meaning for Islamic societies. Kavmiyetcilik (racism) is to regard one race, nation or a lineage as superior and to despise other races. It is an assailant, invader and cruel mentality that disparages the rudiments that are not based on its own tradition. Kavmiyetcilik is a germ that loosens religious ties, spreads anarchy and atrocity, and destroys social structures. It is destructive mainly because it replaces religious and moral rules, which put life in order, with the rules based on race and nation. The most terrifying germ in social structures is the claims on lineages. Therefore, this germ is on the top of the list of things that have potential to destroy our social unity. Ultimately, Kavmiyetcilik is based on dispute and division. The damages that Kavmiyetcilik causes can be summarized as follow: - Regarding a lineage as superior damages justice, which is the foundation of societies. It causes cruelty, coercion and terror. Favoritism is one of the basic features of Kavmiyetcilik. Hence, Kavmiyetcilik could not be just and merciful. - Kavmiyetcilik damages social ties. It undermines relationships, fondness, affection and sincerity. It generates grudge, hatred and ostracism, which are the sources of all the germs that destroy our social unity and moral values. - Claiming superiority to a lineage creates a horrifying hatred-filled environment. It diminishes compassion, kindness, affection and benevolence, which are divine moral characters. An example would be the massacres carried out by racist anarchists. - Kavmiyetcilik feeds on other races and nations. Its philosophy is based on arrogance and selfishness. It claims superiority and nobility that harms social life and creates unrests and conflicts in societies. It considers itself virtuous and honorable, and never accepts any defect. - Kavmiyetcilik is like a poisonous oleander tree that extinguishes the human world. Humanity has been suffering from its poisonous fruits for centuries. First and Second World Wars are the proofs for that. Kavmiyetcilik is a destructive storm. It has weakened many states, terminated many more and created coercion and cruelty in the history of humankind. Racism is not about being different from other races; it is to regard one race physically, intellectually and morally superior and powerful based on biological differences. This approach can even reach a point where it justifies social and racial discriminations, violence and even genocide. Those who consider themselves as different, based on race, linage, nation, ethnicity, group etc. have to accept that these differences are the natural facts of creation. They cannot deny the existence of these differences. They do not have the chance to choose them. One cannot choose one’s mother and father, just like one cannot choose to be Turk, Kurd, Pharisee, Arab, Black, White European or American. These differences are God’s graces and mercy, of which they are not fully aware. They do not know the hidden causes behind these differences. One cause is to know each other. Image, if all the people were created as the same; how would they know each other, how would their social, economic, political relations become. Eventually, ‘one of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. There are indeed signs in that for those who know’. This deviant mentality and its philosophy of ‘homo homini lupus’ appeared when people forgot companionship, co-existence, the holiness and inviolability of human life, and the fact that the God is the only one who can create and claim a life; in other words, it appeared when people forgot humanity. People have started to kill each other for thin reasons and excuses. They have used their mind, intelligence, knowledge and science, which are blessings, to kill each other in order to live a bit more confortable life. They have even manufactured nuclear, biological and chemical mass destruction weapons in order to reach their disgusting objective. Particularly, racist imperialist global powers have used Kavmiyetcilik dastardly in order to sell more weapons to the sides they have divided. In this way, while these powers are making vast amount of money, those who were obstacles on their ways are still killing each other with these weapons today. Yet, it must not be forgotten that leaving these artificial division aside and gathering and uniting sincerely under ‘Islamic Brotherhood’ would futile this treacherous aims. As Mehmet Akif Ersoy states ‘an enemy cannot draw into a nation until an idea of division enter into a nation, a nation cannot be intimidated if the hearts beat together’ Many lives have been lost for the sake of racism and Kavmiyetcilik. Many families were destroyed, many people died for the sake of colonialism. Many massacres were carried during brutal conquests. Many died for the sake of power and sovereignty. Unrestrained desires, grudges and hatreds have caused many lives. Anarchy and terror killed many more. Many vendettas killed lots. Mafia and shadow powers killed many. Many important people’s deaths remain unsolved. There have been chaos, fear, anxiety, apprehension, unrest, blood and tears on earth. All these have occurred as a result of Kavmiyetcilik’s productions of ‘we, they, others and enemies’. Those who have contaminated with this horrifying virus have killed ‘Eşref-i Mahlûkat [the most honourable of all creatures]’ with thin excuses. There is only disappointment to them in this world and the other. ‘And whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment’ (Quran, Surah the Women In today’s world, the illness of Kavmiyetcilik has been destroying the most important values like tolerance, accepting the others, compassion, co-existence and replacing them with othering, exclusion and division. Racism is not an ideology but a psychological disease. It is not easy to cure but not impossible either. The remedy for this illness is Islam that is the only religion for all humankind for all times. Quran has seen and diagnosed today’s issues around 1400 years ago and shown the remedy that will cure all these illnesses from their roots. This remedy is ‘Islamic Brotherhood’. There are enough sources for all humankind in this world. All these issues are only the results of unfair and unjust distribution of these sources. If there is the chance for all to live comfortably and happy in this world; then there is no reason to hurt each other.
