IN THE LIGHT OF ‘BRIDGE OF DRINA’ BY IVO ANDRIÇ, BRIDGES REACHING TO LIVES: BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA

The work of arts created through the human history and called global cultural heritage has a precious task to transfer old values to our modern day. One of the most important part of cultural heritage is Bridges for sure. Bridge means a connection between two things or a bond conbining two things. After a while Bridges are not only a concrete building but also they become an icon with the meaning they carried in the area. They play the leading role by carrying people and witnessing many events with the locals. They are the structures establishing connection with future as well bearing the traces of the past. Bosnia Herzogovina is a country with so many bridges which are not only stone buildings combining two distant places but also they are the buildings which sometimes the symbol of peace and melting pot of different cultures and sometimes the beginning spot of the war. The bridges in Bosnia-Herzegovina are the architectural works of art which many bitter sweet memories have taken place. The bridges in Bosnia have a different soul of themselves in addition to their architectural beauty. They have organic links with the people living in the city. Thus, Bosnia succeeds to be among the countries best known with its bridges. ‘The Bridge of Drina’ ,a novel by Ivo Andriç, tells the story of Drina Bridge constructed by Sokullu Mehmet Pasha during Ottoman Period. The Bridge in this novel comes onto the stage as the main character which doesnt only combine two banks together but it is a meeting point for the east and the west cultures as well. Another bridge called Mostar constructed in Ottoman Period has became the symbol of multiculturalism. But Bridges has not always had the role of combining cultures and bringing them closer. Sometimes they became the start point of destruction. Latin and Vbanja bridges are the places where first sparks of destructive fire was ignited. In our presentation, the meaning the bridges in Bosnia carried is going to be studied in the lights of The Bridge of Drina by Ivo Andriç
