ANALYSIS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS STEM IN TERMS OF VARIOUS VARIABLES
The aim of this study is to analyze primary school students’ attitude towards STEM with respect to various variables. It is a descriptive study in the survey model. The scope of the study is comprised of 4th grade students in the central districts of Gaziantep province in the Fall term of 2016-2017 Academic Year and 492 students from seven primary schools were chosen using the random method. The data regarding the research were collected using the STEM Attitude Scale devised by Faber, Wiebe, Corn, Townsend and Collins (2013). The scale is made up of 4 sub-scales, that is, the scale is a 5-likert type scale consisting of four sub-scales, that is, “mathematics”, “science”, “engineering-technology” and “21st century skills” and 37 items. The structure validity of the scale for the primary school was tested by the researchers through confirmatory factor analysis and when the results from the fit indices (χ2/sd, GFI, AGFI, RMSEA, RMR, SRMR, CFI, NNFI, NFI and PGFI) were assessed, it was determined that the model comprised of 37 items and four components has an acceptable model goodness value. According to the research results, it was determined that the attitude scores regarding STEM differ in favor of the students attending science centers, conducting experiments, using laboratories, tablets, smart boards in lessons, taking part in competitions and getting information about STEM topics from an expert. It was also established that the STEM attitude scores differ in favor of the students attending private schools, yet do not differ according to gender. Moreover, a significant difference was ascertained in terms of the actualization of the activities which are determined to improve STEM attitudes in a positive manner.
