DETERMINING THE HALAL TOURISM CONCEPT PERCEPTIONS OF HOTEL MANAGERS IN ÇANAKKALE

In today's world, tourism has become an indispensable source of income. Halal tourism or Islamic tourism has emerged as a new phenomenon shaped by the growth of the halal industry. Researches show that the halal tourism market is one of the critical markets in the world. Religion is one of the social institutions which have significant effects on people’s manners, values, and behaviors for both individuals and the community. However, the factor motivating people to the tourism activities based on religion is piety phenomenon rather than the religion itself. The Halal tourism industry aims to attract tourists from Muslim and non-Muslim countries by offering new products and services. This study aims to determine the perceptions of hotel managers in Çanakkale regarding the concept of Islamic hotel and to evaluate Çanakkale's halal tourism potential. In this purpose, data were collected from 20 hotel managers in Çanakkale using interviews from qualitative research methods in the study. As the target population has been reached, no sampling method has been applied in the study. In this context, it has been planned to do interviews with the hotel managers through the closed ended question form composed of 16 questions based on the scale developed by Tekin and Turhan (2017). In this context, the opinions of the hotel managers in Çanakkale regarding the concept of halal tourism have been obtained. According to results, Hotel managers in Çanakkale have negative perceptions about Halal tourism concept. The leading reason for the negative perceptions of the hotel managers to Halal tourism concept in Çanakkale is about perceiving the concept as religion-based. In this context, this so-called tourism concept has been accepted as a “conservative” approach. Secondly, the lack of the demand for Halal tourism concept in Çanakkale tourism destination could be shown as the other reason.
