BUILDING AND PROMOTING LEARNER AUTONOMY: IS IT A CHALLENGE FOR EFL TEACHER TRAINERS?
Learner autonomy has been one of the areas of interest for many researchers in foreign language education for a long time. This study has not been an exception to it. While most of the studies in this area investigated learner autonomy in foreign language learners, this study focused its attention on exploring learner autonomy in teacher candidates in an EFL teacher training program. In this study, the views of EFL teacher trainers on learner autonomy, promoting learner autonomy and the challenges in promoting it were investigated. For this purpose, qualitative means of investigation were used to explore the issue. As a data collection instrument, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The collected data was then analyzed qualitatively. Four experienced EFL teacher trainers were the participants of this study. The findings revealed that the participants were well aware of what learner autonomy was yet they indicated that it was very difficult to promote learner autonomy in their classes for different reasons. Lack of motivation on the learners’ part and nature and the habits of the learners were the main obstacles they articulated. The findings showed that the challenges the participant teacher faced in promoting learner autonomy were changes in teacher role, culture-related issues and teacher autonomy
