MEDIATING EFFECT OF MARITAL PROBLEM SOLVING ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MARITAL SATISFACTION, PERCEIVED SPOUSAL SUPPORT AND MARRIAGE DURATION

In this study, it was investigated whether the relationship between marital satisfaction and marital problem solving was mediated by perceived spousal support and marriage duration. This research was carried out on the basis of quantitative research approach and is designed with relational screening model. A total of 212 married individuals (117 female and 95 male) have participated in the present study. Participants’ ages ranged from 17 to 67 years, with a mean age of 35.33 years. The Spouse Support Scale, the Marital Life Scale, and the Marital Problem Solving Scale were used to collect the data. A model was established according to previous the literature on marital satisfaction, perceived spousal support and problem-solving in marriage and path analysis was used to determine the direct and mediating effect of the variable. When the standardized coefficients of the path analysis in the model were examined, it was found that marital problem solving served as a partial mediator on the relationship between perceived spousal support and marital satisfaction and served as a full mediator on the relationship between marriage duration and marriage satisfaction. In addition, perceived spousal support and marriage duration accounted for 51% of marital problem solving; these three variables accounted for 71% of the marital satisfaction. The model fit indexes for this model were good. According to other findings of the study, it was found that marriage satisfaction, perceived spousal support and marital problem solving did not differ significantly according to gender; marriage satisfaction, perceived spousal support, and problem-solving in marriage decreased significantly as the duration of the marriage and the number of children increased.
