The Nexus Between CO₂ Emissions and Foreign Direct Investment, Human Development Index and Technology

The world faces many critical problems caused by climate changes. The mentioned fact has led many economists to research about the determinants of economic factors related to climate change. The most important factor causing climate change is theincrease in greenhouse gas and CO₂ emissionswhich has the highest ratio within CHG. In order to test the long-term relationship of CO2 emissions, which threaten the world in many respects, in the Gross Domestic Product and foreign direct investments (FDI), human development index and technological development; the top 50 countries that received the highest foreign direct investment from 1980 to 2018 have been identified. 17 data accessible high income countries has been selected to test the Pollution Hypothesis with 17 countries, which constitute 49.8% of the world FDI, and the long-run relationship between other independent variables; HDI and technology, panel cointegration followed by Beck Katz random effects test. According to the analysis result; The existence of a long-term negative-directional relationship between HDI and FDI and CO₂ / GDP, and a positive and statistically significant relationship with technology has been determined. Thus, according to the criteria of the World Bank, the “Pollution Halo Hypothesis” for countries with high income has been proved. Another important outcome of the paper is thought to be the recommendation of adding the criterion of 'share of renewable energy consumption within total energy consumption' into the HDI calculation system.
