Determination of the Heterotic Effects and Phenotypic Correlation in Earlines, and Agronomical and Quality Characteristics in Cotton ( G. hirsutum L.)

This research was conducted at the Adnan Menderes University Agricultural Faculty.The objectives of the study were to investigate the heterotic effects of earliness and agricultural and quality characters under Aegean region conditions, where earliness is extremely important, and to determine correlations among earliness characters and correlations among earliness, yield, ginning output, seed cotton weight per boll and quality characteristics in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L). In the 1995, F 1 generation, and in 1996 the F 2 generation were obtained, and in 1997, F 1 and F 2 generations were grown with parents in randomized block design with three replications. The highest heterosis was observed in the production rate index, seed cotton yield and days to first squaring. The highest F 2 depression and F 2 deviations were found in the first picking percentage. Earliness characteristics other than days to first squaring, days to first flowering and days to first boll opening were found to have positive trends for heterosis. It was also determined that it is not possible to improve a genotype combining high seed cotton yield, ginning outturn and fiber quality with earliness.
