Ardışık İki Dilli Yetişkinlerde Ünlü Fonemlerin Algılanması

Bu çalışmada, ikinci dili erken edinmenin kısa süreli ünlü ses fonemlerini algılamaktaki etkisi iki iki dilli ve birkontrol grubu (Türkçe-İngilizce erken iki dilliler, Türkçe-İngilizce geç iki dilliler ve İngilizce konuşan tek dillikontrol grubu) katılımı ile incelenmiştir: Uyaran olarak İngilizce, Türkçe ve Tay dilinden kaydedilen kelimelerdentüretilmiş izole formda ünlü fonemleri kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlarda sadece Tay diline özgü fonemlerin olduğu uyarançiftlerinde hem fonolojik hem de fonetik süreçlerde fark bulunmuştur. Sonuçların gösterdiği gibi, özellikle okumadönemi öncesinde edinilmiş olması ikinci dile ait fonem kategorilerine karşı bir hassasiyet geliştirmektedir. Ancakikinci dil hassas dönem ve/veya okuma becerilerinin ediniminden sonra öğrenilmişse –fonetik süreçle ilişkili olduğudüşünülen– bu fonolojik temelli hassasiyet gözlemlenmemektedir. Elde edilen bulgular hem teorik hem de olasıuygulama alanları çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır.

Perception of Vowels in Sequential Bilinguals

We investigated the effect of early exposure to a second language on the perception of isolated vowel contrasts with three groups: Turkish-English early bilinguals, Turkish-English late bilinguals, monolinguals. As stimuli, we used isolated forms of vowels from English, Turkish and Thai. Results revealed that for Thai-only native contrasts, a significant difference was observed between late and early bilinguals for both phonetic and phonological levels of processing suggesting that acquisition of a second language prior to reading skills acquisition paves the way for sensitivity to non-native vowel contrasts. Findings are discussed in the light of theoretical considerations as well as in terms of applied settings such as second language learning and teaching.
